The Doubleheader That Decided a Playoff Race
This is the Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets story that separates this rivalry from an ordinary division series, and it happened recently enough that most fans still remember exactly where they were.
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene washed out the final two games of a critical Braves-Mets series in Atlanta. Both Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets clubs entered the rescheduled Monday doubleheader tied at 88-72, fighting the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final two National League Wild Card spots on what was supposed to be the last day of the regular season. The math was brutal and simple: if either team swept the doubleheader, Arizona reached the postseason instead. If the two games split, both the Braves and the Mets advanced and Arizona went home, because both NL East rivals held the tiebreaker over the Diamondbacks. Atlanta won the opener and the Mets took the nightcap, splitting the Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets doubleheader exactly as needed, and both teams punched their playoff tickets on the same afternoon at each other's expense.
It was not even the first time weather forced Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets into a scheduling scramble. A separate rainout in 2026 pushed a postponed game into another same-day doubleheader at Citi Field, a reminder that this particular series seems to attract chaos on a schedule that already carries plenty of history without it.
Truist Park and Citi Field Tickets: Two Very Different Home Environments
Truist Park tickets and Citi Field tickets offer genuinely different Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets experiences for the same rivalry, and knowing the difference matters when you are choosing which leg of the 2027 series to attend.
For Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets, Truist Park in Atlanta sits inside The Battery Atlanta, a mixed-use entertainment district that turns a Braves vs Mets weekend into a full day out well before first pitch, with restaurants, bars and a plaza atmosphere that most ballparks cannot match. Citi Field in Queens delivers the classic New York Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets baseball experience, with a design that pays homage to the old Ebbets Field and a crowd that brings genuine big-city intensity to a division rivalry.
for either leg of this Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets series:
- At Truist Park, seats along the third base line get the earliest shade on afternoon getaway-day games, a real factor for the April series.
- At Citi Field, the Pepsi Porch in right field delivers a unique above-the-field angle and tends to carry strong energy for a division matchup.
- Both venues sell out selectively for Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets rather than automatically, so a Tuesday game in May behaves very differently from a Saturday in the April series.
Atlanta Braves Vs New York Mets Ticket Prices: What the Calendar Tells You
Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets ticket prices move with the calendar as much as with either team's standing in the Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets series. The four-game Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets April series at Truist Park opens the year with real anticipation on both sides, and weekend dates within it, especially May 1 and May 2, carry the strongest demand of that set. The May series at Citi Field is a mid-week set, which typically softens pricing relative to a weekend slate, while the August dates at Citi Field carry pennant-race weight if either club is fighting for playoff positioning at that point in the season.
Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets last minute tickets are a reasonable strategy for the mid-week May dates in Queens, and a much tighter call for the April weekend games or any August date that lines up with a tight standings race. Purchase Atlanta Braves Vs New York Mets Tickets with the full checkout total in mind rather than the listed number, since fee structures differ between sellers on an identical seat. TicketWhiz does not sell or issue tickets; you complete your purchase on whichever major marketplace wins for your date.
A Rivalry With Real Numbers: History Most Pages Get Wrong
Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets first met on May 11, 1962, at the Polo Grounds in New York, with the Milwaukee-era Braves winning 8-5. That single detail, often garbled on competitor pages, sets the stage for one of the longest continuously running rivalries in the National League, predating the Mets' own move into Shea Stadium.
Through the most recent meeting, Atlanta and New York have played this Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets series 968 times, with the Braves holding the all-time regular season edge at roughly 526-433-1. Postseason play tells a different story entirely: the Mets actually lead the head-to-head playoff series 5 wins to 4, despite the Braves winning the more famous of their two postseason meetings. The two Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets sides met in the 1969 NLCS, won by the Mets in a sweep on their way to the Miracle Mets World Series title, and again in the 1999 NLCS, won by Atlanta in six games.
Game 5 of that 1999 Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets series remains the signature moment in the rivalry. At 5 hours and 46 minutes, it stood as the longest game in postseason history by elapsed time. In the bottom of the 15th inning, Robin Ventura hit what appeared to be a walk-off grand slam over the right-center field wall, only for teammates to mob him before he could finish rounding the bases, turning the box score into the famous Grand Slam Single, a 4-3 Mets win that kept New York alive before Atlanta closed out the series two days later.
The Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets blowouts belong mostly to Atlanta. The Braves own the two largest margins in series history, a 21-3 win in August 2023 and a 20-2 win in June 2021, while the Mets' biggest win came further back, a 20-6 result in August 1971. Atlanta also holds the longer Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets win streak at 12 straight games spanning 1962 to 1963, against a 7-game Mets streak from 1979.
Buying Strategy: The Two Weekends Worth Watching Closest
Buy Atlanta Braves Vs New York Mets Tickets with the standings in mind rather than just the calendar, since this rivalry has a documented history of turning an ordinary series into something that decides a season.
The April four-game Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets set at Truist Park is the earliest read you get on both rosters, and the two weekend dates inside it, May 1 and May 2, carry the strongest early demand. The August Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets series at Citi Field is the one to watch closest as the season develops. If either the Braves or the Mets are within striking distance of a Wild Card spot by early August, that three-game set behaves like a genuine playoff preview rather than a routine division series, exactly the way the 2024 stretch run did.
The May Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets series at Citi Field, sandwiched between those two windows, is historically the most approachable leg of the schedule to buy for, since mid-week dates in late spring rarely carry the same urgency as an April opener or an August pennant chase.
