How Long Does an MLB Postseason Game Last?

Quick Answer

An MLB postseason game typically runs about 3 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes, roughly 20 to 30 minutes longer than the 2025 regular-season average of 2 hours 38 minutes. Extra-inning games can run considerably longer - including a recent 2025 World Series game that lasted 18 innings and 6 hours 39 minutes.

The specific round matters too: Wild Card and Division Series games tend to run closer to the regular-season pace, while League Championship Series and World Series games, with their heavier national broadcast production, tend to run longest.

If you're planning your night around a playoff game - whether you're watching from home or heading to the ballpark - postseason baseball runs noticeably longer than a regular-season game. Here's a full breakdown of why, and what to expect at each stage of October baseball.

Why Do Playoff Games Run Longer Than Regular Season Games?

Postseason games run longer due to more pitching changes as managers play matchups more aggressively, longer commercial breaks tied to national broadcast contracts, extended pregame ceremonies, and the sheer stakes leading to more cautious, deliberate play.

The gap between regular-season and postseason game length has actually been a decades-long baseball storyline. Even with MLB's pitch clock - introduced in 2023 and credited with cutting the regular-season average down to around 2 hours 38 minutes in 2025 - postseason games still consistently run longer.

Bullpen usage spikes dramatically in October, as managers are far more willing to burn through relief pitchers for a handful of outs than they would during the 162-game grind, and every pitching change adds a mound visit and warmup time. National broadcast partners also tend to run longer commercial breaks between innings than local regional broadcasts do during the regular season, which adds up over nine innings.

How Long Is a Wild Card Game?

Wild Card games tend to run closest to the regular-season pace, typically around 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, since the best-of-three format doesn't yet carry the extreme bullpen usage seen in later rounds.

The Wild Card round is a best-of-three series, meaning both the intensity and the game-length inflation tend to be somewhat more modest than later rounds - though still longer than a typical regular-season game given the elimination stakes involved.

How Long Is a Division Series Game?

Division Series games typically run around 3 hours to 3 hours 10 minutes, as a best-of-five format that starts to show heavier bullpen usage and more strategic pitching changes than the Wild Card round.

By the Division Series, teams are firmly in win-or-go-home territory for the remainder of the postseason, and it shows in how aggressively managers deploy their bullpens. This round has also historically produced some of the longest single games in postseason history - including an 18-inning, 6-hour-22-minute Division Series game between the Astros and Mariners in 2022.

How Long Is a League Championship Series Game?

League Championship Series games typically run 3 hours to 3 hours 20 minutes, reflecting both the higher stakes of a best-of-seven format and the increased national broadcast production that comes with it.

The Championship Series rounds - determining each league's pennant winner - carry both heavier bullpen usage and the full weight of a national primetime broadcast, complete with extended pregame and between-inning segments.

How Long Is a World Series Game?

World Series games are typically the longest of the postseason, averaging around 3 hours 15 to 3 hours 30 minutes, and can run dramatically longer in extra-inning games.

The World Series represents the peak of both broadcast production value and win-or-go-home intensity, which combine to produce the longest average game times of any round. The 2025 World Series delivered a dramatic example of just how long these games can run: Game 3 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays went a full 18 innings and lasted 6 hours 39 minutes, making it the second-longest game in World Series history by duration.

What Happens If a Postseason Game Goes to Extra Innings?

If a postseason game is tied after nine innings, it continues into extra innings until one team leads at the end of a completed inning, with each additional inning typically adding 20 to 30 minutes to the total runtime.

Unlike some other levels of baseball, MLB does not use a runner-on-second tiebreaker rule in the postseason, meaning extra-inning playoff games are played under the same rules as any other inning - which is exactly how postseason history has produced some of its most memorable, and longest, marathons.

Beyond the 2025 Dodgers-Blue Jays 18-inning game, the record books include an 18-inning, 6-hour-23-minute game between the Giants and Nationals in 2014, and a 5-hour-50-minute, 18-inning Division Series game between the Astros and Braves in 2005.

How Long Is Each Postseason Round Overall?

Because each round uses a different series format, the total time commitment varies significantly - a Wild Card series can wrap in as little as two games, while a full seven-game League Championship Series or World Series can stretch across nearly two weeks.

The Wild Card round is best-of-three, meaning a series can end in as few as two games if one team sweeps. The Division Series is best-of-five, requiring three wins to advance.

Both the League Championship Series and World Series are best-of-seven, requiring four wins, which means these later rounds can take anywhere from four to seven games depending on how competitive the matchup is.

What Time Do Postseason Games Start?

Postseason games are typically scheduled for primetime broadcast windows, generally starting between 5:00 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. local time depending on the round, network, and whether it's a weekday or weekend game.

Earlier rounds sometimes carry daytime or early-evening start times, especially when doubleheader-style Wild Card scheduling packs two winner-take-all elimination games into a single day for the same network.

By the League Championship Series and World Series, games are almost universally scheduled for national primetime windows to maximize television audience, generally starting around 8:00 to 8:15 p.m. Eastern Time.

These figures reflect nine-inning games; any game that goes to extra innings will run meaningfully longer than these averages.

Tips for Attending a Postseason Game in Person

• Arrive well before first pitch - postseason games typically feature extended pregame ceremonies, including flyovers and special anthem performances, that regular-season games don't have.

• Plan for a night that could run past 11:00 p.m. or later for primetime World Series and Championship Series games, especially if the game goes to extra innings.

• Check gate times specific to your ballpark, since postseason security screening can take longer than a regular-season game due to increased attendance and security measures.

• If you're attending a potential series-clinching game, be aware that postseason celebrations (on-field trophy presentations, etc.) can extend your time at the ballpark well beyond the final out.

• Dress for the weather - October postseason games, especially in northern cities, can run considerably colder by the later innings of a nighttime game than they were at first pitch.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're watching from the couch or heading to the ballpark in person, postseason baseball consistently runs longer than the regular season - and the deeper into October you go, the longer that gap tends to stretch. Building in extra time, especially for potential extra innings or a series-clinching celebration, is the safest way to plan your night around playoff baseball.
